En Taro Adun, Executors!
In today's developer blog, we're taking a closer look at one of the most iconic characters in the entire StarCraft® universe. Prepare to strike from the shadows!
Zeratul returns to the battlefield, known as the legendary Dark Prelate present in both StarCraft® and StarCraft® II. Within Protoss society, the title of Dark Prelate stands equal to the rank of Praetor, placing him among the highest-ranking warriors of his people.
In the video games, Zeratul played a pivotal role in shaping the fate of the Koprulu Sector. He personally slew the Cerebrate Zasz and the second Overmind, uncovered the terrifying existence of the Hybrids, and repeatedly guided both Jim Raynor and Sarah Kerrigan through his prophetic visions. Finally, he made the ultimate sacrifice, giving his life to save Artanis from Amon's control.
So why are we bringing him to the tabletop now, alongside the release of Wave 2?
The main reason is simple: we wanted the promotional miniature to be fully playable from day one. Beyond that, Zeratul remains one of the most beloved characters in the entire StarCraft® universe, and we simply couldn't keep you waiting any longer for his complete ruleset.
Glory to the Firstborn!

Some of you may have noticed that the promotional miniature differs from the version included in the Wave 2 box set.
The promotional sculpt features a more dynamic pose, while the boxed miniature presents a different aesthetic. However, from a gameplay perspective, there is absolutely no difference between them. Both versions use the exact same rules and profile the promotional miniature is simply an alternative sculpt for collectors and fans of the character.
"Retribution will be swift and absolute".
Our goal was to translate Zeratul's digital gameplay directly onto the tabletop.
His strength lies in his elusiveness and his ability to deliver devastating damage exactly where it matters most.
His passive ability, One With the Shadows, grants him the HIDDEN status immediately after completing an action. Even if an enemy reveals him using abilities such as Orbital Scan, Zeratul can quickly fade back into the shadows and regain his invisibility.
While HIDDEN, Zeratul cannot be targeted by ranged attacks unless the attacker is within 4". More importantly, the status allows him to consistently rely on his superior Evade defense characteristic, making him remarkably difficult to pin down.

In melee combat, Zeratul wields the legendary Master Warp Blade, attacking with four dice that hit on a 3+ and deal Damage 2 with every successful strike.
What truly makes the weapon terrifying is the INSTANT keyword. Enemy units cannot use Reactive Abilities during the attack, leaving them completely vulnerable to Zeratul's assault. Combined with Sentenced to Death, this turns him into a nightmare for enemy heroes, elite units, and vulnerable support elements hiding behind the front line. Rather than a blunt instrument, Zeratul becomes a precise surgical tool capable of removing key targets exactly when needed.
His Shadow Strike ability also forces opponents to think twice before engaging him. Any unit that becomes engaged with Zeratul risks suffering immediate damage, making reckless charges extremely costly. Of course, enemies first need to reach him and that is easier said than done. Through Void Prison, Zeratul can impose Speed (2) on nearby enemy units, severely hampering their mobility and disrupting their plans before they can close the distance.

"My allegiance is yours".
One of the greatest challenges in designing Zeratul for the tabletop was accurately representing the explosive impact he has in the video games.
Zeratul is an exceptionally PSI-hungry character. To unlock his full potential, a Protoss commander will often need to spend three or even four PSI points during a single turn and there are still plenty of other units competing for those same resources.
This creates small but meaningful windows of opportunity for your opponent while forcing the Protoss player to carefully manage positioning and Psionic Energy reserves. Properly executing combinations involving Void Blink, Sentenced to Death, and Prophetic Vision requires planning, precision, and resource management.
The INSTANT keyword on the Master Warp Blade perfectly reflects Zeratul's signature combat style: sudden, decisive strikes that leave enemies with no time to react.
"My burdens weigh heavily."
Where will Zeratul fit within the game's evolving meta?
We expect him to become an extremely popular choice rather than a niche character reserved for specific matchups.
His profile is perfectly suited for eliminating high-value enemy targets, including elite units, support specialists, and opposing heroes. At the same time, his mobility and survivability make him highly effective at contesting or capturing distant objectives on his own.
In the hands of a skilled player, Zeratul also becomes a powerful psychological weapon. His mere presence on the battlefield—and the constant threat of a 6" Void Blink—forces Terran and Zerg commanders to tighten their formations and reconsider their positioning.
Even when he isn't attacking, he influences the decisions of every opponent across the table.
