Siege Tank: Thunder from the High Ground

In the Koprulu Sector, there are few sounds as terrifying as the heavy thud of a Siege Tank locking into position. If you ever played any StarCraft® game, you can hear them in your head right now. No surprise. Even in Tank Mode, those units serve as heavily armoured frontline vehicles, but once anchored in Siege Mode, they transform into devastating long-range artillery, pounding all enemies flat.

The Siege Tank marks a major milestone for StarCraft®: Tabletop Miniatures Game as our first true Massive vehicle. Mounted on an impressive 150mm base, its sheer bulk commands table presence and introduces entirely new movement challenges. Positioning this behemoth requires careful planning, especially if a cunning opponent uses their units to block your advance. Fortunately, a properly entrenched Siege Tank doesn't need to chase the enemy; it forces the enemy to come to it.

In Tank Mode, the Siege Tank’s firepower rivals that of three Marauder models. While impressive, this vehicle reveals its true, devastating potential once it enters Siege Mode. Once entrenched, it utilises the Blast Template to punish tightly clustered enemy forces, catching both the Main target and any surrounding models in its explosive Spillover radius.

Then, there is the range factor. On paper, the Shock Cannon only has an 18” range. Calling that "only" 18" is an understatement, as it is already one of the longest ranges in the game, but what if it could strike even further? During the Movement Phase, the Siege Tank can nominate any Friendly Unit to act as its spotter. Then, during the Assault Phase, it can target any enemy that is within 8" of, and Visible to, that spotter. In theory, this allows its payload to reach any coordinate on the battlefield. Let’s see how this works in practice.

Imagine the first round of the game. A Siege Tank deploys onto the battlefield and designates an advancing Unit of Marines as its spotter. Unimpressed, the Zerg player bravely deploys a Unit of Roaches directly onto the table, confident that they remain safely out of range from all Terran guns at least during the opening round.

Jim Raynor joins the battle and immediately utilises his Orders Active Ability to remove the Activation Marker from a Unit of Marines, allowing them to activate again, advancing even closer to their target.

During the Assault Phase, the Zerg player moves their Roaches carefully, ensuring they stay more than 12" away from the Marines. The Zerg player believes this will keep their precious Roaches safely out of range of the Marines' C-14 Rifles, as well as outside the 8" spotting range needed for the Siege Tank's artillery strike. The problem is that the Marines never planned to perform a Ranged Attack during this Assault Phase. Instead, they use their activation to Run, crossing the battlefield and ending their movement within 8" of the target.

While the Marines forfeit their own shooting, the Siege Tank is now perfectly locked on. The tank opens fire, landing a devastating blow that wipes out two of the three Roaches. For the Zerg player, it was a painful but important lesson.

Did we mention that during Army Building, you can purchase specialised, single-use ammunition to make the Shock Cannon even more devastating? No? Good. After all, we shouldn’t reveal all of our secrets before release.

So, where does the Siege Tank fit into the current StarCraft®: Tabletop Miniatures Game meta? We expect it to become a highly popular centrepiece for Terran commanders, though its hefty Mineral and Supply cost means it won't be an auto-include in every single roster. It will truly shine in larger Standard or Grand Offensive games, where you have the resources to screen it with Units of Marines and Goliaths properly. Interestingly, during our playtesting, we discovered that fielding two, or even three, Siege Tanks is a perfectly viable strategy. If you’ve ever dreamed of commanding your own Dominion armoured battalion, now is your chance to make that a reality.

Designing the Siege Tank model was one of our biggest challenges to date. Because it is such a beloved and iconic unit, we knew community expectations would be sky-high. Early in development, we actually experimented with making the miniature physically transformable between Tank and Siege modes! However, we quickly realised that there are simply too many moving parts. Implementing all of them would have compromised the sculpt's durability and detail, so we opted for a premium, static design that captures its heavy, entrenched aesthetic perfectly.

To make the most of your new tanks, you will need a perfect vantage point. Luckily, with this Wave, we are also introducing a new terrain pack featuring High Ground and Ramps. Most units cannot simply scale a vertical cliff and must utilise Ramps to reach the elevated position. However, if you manage to place a Siege Tank on top of a cliff using abilities such as "Ready for Dust-off" or "Ready for Pickup?", you lock down the ultimate firing position! At that point, there is only one thing left to do: look your opponent in the eyes and proclaim that the battle is over, because you have the high ground.
